The last two years : phase of transformations on the railway
Rail transport, which is one of the main branches of the transport system of Azerbaijan,endures a stage of the dynamic development. Large-scale reforms started by great leader Heydar Aliyev and successfully implemented nowadays by the President Ilham Aliyev.
After Javid Gurbanov’s appointment of the head of CJSC С on February 9, 2015, it was beginning of new transformations. Besides the active participation in various international projects, CJSC “Azerbaijan Railways” significant steps of growth of transit potential also have been made.
As a result, it had accelerated the construction of the being one of the main project of the 21st century of the railroad of Baku-Tbilisi-Kars which not only will link three countries, but also will become the bridge for tens of the people. A railway service along this route is scheduled to launch this year.
By joining to this project of a new rail link, Azerbaijan took one more step designed for the future.
Another important for Azerbaijan international project is the transport corridor “North-South”.
In accordance with the decree of the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on December 7, 2015 “About acceleration of the work on a segment of the International Transport Corridor “North-South”, passing through the territory of Azerbaijan”, from the station Astara to the Iranian border the new 8.3-kilometer rail line is laid.
Over the last two years significant steps have been taken for the increasing the country’s transit potential. On August 3, 2015 the first test container train Nomad Express arrived at Baku International Sea Trade Port.
Then on September 12, 2015 was launched 1th Baku-Sumgait train at Baku passenger station. The ceremony was attended by President of Azerbaijan Republic – Ilham Aliyev.
Restoration of pre-existing between Baku and Sumgait of the railway communication capable to fix a passenger traffic density problem in this direction, as well as congestion on the highway between the two cities, it was the demand of time. For this purpose, first of all, construction of the railroad which began on March 3, 2015 on the railway of Baku-Khirdalan-Sumgait was required. On September 2 work was completed here.
On May 13, 2016 was signed the protocol on accession of CJSC “Azerbaijani Railways” to the train “Viking”. This project covers three countries – Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine, performing cargo delivery from the basin of the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea basin.
Recently also the railroad locomotive fleet is updated. For purchase of 50 cargo and passenger locomotives was signed the contract with the French ALSTOM. They are going to buy 10 diesel locomotives from Kazakhstan. 5 diesel locomotives which arrived to the country will be used in case of a cargo transportation in the next few days. Also purchased 4 electric locomotive operating at constant current.
On October 12, 2016 after overhaul the Sangachal production base Specialized Railway Enterprise LLC No. 5 of CJSC “Azerbaijani Railways” is put in operation. We have to say that 25-meter frames are made generally at this entity.
Lately on Sangachal production base the new platform 90 long and 16 meters wide for assembly of railroad switches is built. Assembly of the lower structure of the way, that is cross ties here for the first time for all history of the railroads of Azerbaijan is performed with steel concrete use. 16 new railroad switches are already established on various sites of the railroad.
Among the most volume operations on reconstruction it is possible to specify also the major repair of the office building of CJSC “Azerbaijani Railways” which is realized according to the modern standards. For employees in the building all conditions, necessary for operation, are created, offices are arranged with new furniture and the equipment, the building is connected to the high-speed Internet, systems of heating and cooling are centralized.
Along with this the application stage on the railroad of the country of the modern technologies began. Operations on transition of power supply from a direct current on variable, to purchase of new signaling systems and communication, improvement of road economy, up-dating of locomotive and carriage parks, etc. are done.
Also the Baku passenger station underwent major repair. The facade of the main building of the station was reconstructed with saving architectural style. The interior underwent basic changes, ticket offices, left-luggage offices, passenger platforms are capitally repaired, escalators are replaced.
For this period the management of CJSC “Azerbaijani Railways” together with ITURC carried out work on improvement of housing conditions of railroad workers, 150 of which were provided with apartments in the last two years. Work in this direction will be continue in the future too.
Recently also start its work “ASAN Train” – a joint project of CJSC “Azerbaijani Railways” and ASAN Service. On December 28, 2016 at Bilajari’s station the head of state Ilham Aliyev got acquainted with “ASAN Train”.
The concept of “ASAN Train” is realized at the request of the President Ilham Aliyev for the purpose of ensuring access to the state services to the citizens living in regions where there are no centers of ASAN Service. “Train ASAN” consists of four wagons, including the waiting room, laboratory, the hall of services, a compartment for rest of employees. By means of this exit service four state bodies will render to citizens nine types of service. There are also three types of functional support services – a photo and medical services, and also banking services rendered to Azerpost LLC.
On December 29, 2016 on the route Nakhchivan-Mashad-Nakhchivan started to run international express train, which follows from Nakhchivan through Julfa, Tabriz and Tehran to Mashhad twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays.
The process of reforms at the railway of the country continues.
The reforms performed on the steel highway of the country at the last two years under the leadership of the head of “Azerbaijani Railways” Javid Gurbanov, are expected updating of this huge transport artery and increase the level of the support services provided to citizens.
