Work is continuing at the border of Iran (Astara)
Azerbaijan Railways ” is actively involved in the process of the realization “North-South” İnternational Transport Corridor.
After the decree of President of Azerbaijan Republic Ilham Aliyev on December 7, 2015 about ” Acceleration the work at the Azerbaijani part of the “North-South” International Transport corridor” all the forces mobilized in accordance with the signed decree.
On April 20,2016 Azerbaijan and Iran have held a groundbreaking ceremony for construction of a railroad bridge, which length is 82.5 km, over the Astara River on the border of the two countries.
8.3 km single-track railway and the construction of Astara railway bridge over the river finished few days ago and the test train passed through the newly built bridge. Heads of executive agencies, representatives of the local community participated at the ceremony.
Now, at the Iranian side was laid 600 meters long railway. At the present time work is continued in Astara . The construction of transshipment terminal and the railway station in the area of 35 hectares are also included in this work.
As part of the construction works there is a process of construction of roadbed, the transfer from the territory of communication lines, and also a construction of drainage systems.
It should be reminded that the agreement of rather transport corridor “North-South” is reached on September 12, 2000 in St. Petersburg between the Russian Federation, Iran and India. It came into force on May 21, 2002. In September, 2005 Azerbaijan officially joined the project.
The transport corridor “North-South” is intended to connect northern Europe to South-East Asia. Working at full capacity, the international transport corridor is able to provide an exit of European countries, Russia, Central Asia and the Caucasus to the Persian Gulf and India, as well as to intensify commercial relations of Caspian Sea with the Black Sea countries.
