Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway is developing
Despite the fact that more than 2 years have passed since its commissioning, the interest in the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway, which is called the Silk Road, continues to grow. The existing capabilities and potential of the project, the convenience of cargo transportation in this way, has led to an increase in the volume of transported cargo.
One of the main directions of its activity,” ADY Express “LLC, a subsidiary of” Azerbaijan Railways ” CJSC, which is attracting new types of cargo to transit routes passing through Azerbaijan, has made use of the wide opportunities of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway to make use of this road another large-scale manufacturer. This time the ADY Express started transporting the products of the Russian company “Evraz Nijnetaqilskiy metallurqiçeskiy kombinat” to the Turkish market by the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway.
30 wagons presented by ADY Express were loaded with iron bars at the Smychka station of the Sverdlovsk region of Russia. Cargo wagons delivered to Kars and Turkey’s Payas station, passing through Russia, Azerbaijan and Georgia at a distance of 5175 km. At present, the first cargo shipment at the Georgian-Turkish border – at the Akhalkalaki station of Georgia-will continue its journey after the overfilling of the wagons presented by the Turkish side. The total weight of the cargo is 2053 tons. This is the first cargo of “Evraz Nijnetaqilskiy metallurqiçeskiy kombinat” company transported by Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway. At present, it is planned to increase the volume of cargo transported in the test mode several times later. “Evraz Nijnetaqilskiy metallurqiçeskiy kombinat” plans to transport 30-40 thousand tons of cargo each month in this way. In addition, the company also wishes to transport large volume of coal to Turkey via BTK.
Let’s note that “Evraz Nijnetaqilskiy metallurqiçeskiy kombinat” is one of the largest metallurgical and mining companies in the world. The company’s assets are concentrated in such countries as Russia, USA, Canada, Czech Republic, Italy, South Africa, Turkey and Kazakhstan. It is one of the largest steel producers in the world. According to steel production, it is in 15th place in the world. The company is among the leaders of the metallurgical industry in North America and Europe.
It should also be noted that this party is not the first rail products to be sent from Russia, Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway and Turkey with the operation of ADY Express. Since last year, the company has been transporting loads of the Magnitogorsk Metallurgical Combine (MMK) to Turkey. At present, steel products belonging to 20,000 tons of MMK are transported to Turkey every month. This figure is also planned to reach 30-40 thousand tons in the next few months. In total, ADY Express only 2 of these client, 70 thousand tons of cargo per month will be transported via BTK.
In the meantime, both the Magnitogorsk Metallurgical Combine and the Evraz company delivered their products to Turkey via the Black Sea. However, the transportation of cargo through BTK, gives the cargo owner a number of benefits:
• Transportation of goods does not depend on weather conditions (without waiting)
• The type of transport does not change (goods are transported only through r/w, there is no need to carry cargo from wagons to ships and from ship to wagons. This meant an additional cost)
• The distance is shortened and consequently the transit time is reduced (cargo is delivered to the address more quickly)
Thus, the opportunities created by the BTK Railway cause large cargo owners to choose to transport their products in this way.
