Two years have passed since the beginning of the Astara terminal operation
Intensive work continues within the North-South Transport corridor, which is one of the main international transit routes that Azerbaijan is involved in, and the existing regional cooperation opens up great opportunities for cargo owners. One of the major infrastructure projects implemented on this route was the construction of the Astara cargo terminal, located 1.4 km from the Azerbaijani-Iranian border, on the territory of a neighboring state.
2 years ago, when the first stage of construction was completed, the terminal received the first freight train. A freight train on the Astara (Azerbaijan) — Astara (Iran) route entered the terminal area where it was unloaded and thus the Astara terminal started its operations. It should be noted that the construction of the Astara terminal is carried out by “Azerbaijan Railways” CJSC in accordance with the bilateral agreement of June 13, 2017. Since the start of construction, a lot of work has been done on the terminal over the past 3 years. Currently, a common cargo terminal has already been built at the Astara terminal complex and 1800 meters of internal railway tracks have been laid. In addition, the terminal has a platform with an area of 1440 sq. m. for cargo handling. In addition, an administrative building was built at the terminal, where the customs authorities of Iran are currently located. Construction of the 2nd administrative building continues. The territory has a modern security system and lighting. On the part of the operator of the terminal, “ADY Express LLC”, has installed various equipment for carrying out overclocking operations: cars, cranes, pumps for handling grain and installations for handling vegetable oil. Despite the significant work carried out, work on the construction of the terminal continues. In the near future, 4 more railway tracks will be built at the terminal, the length of the platform and the platform for transshipment of goods will be increased.
As for the volume of cargo handling, in 2019, ADY Express handled almost 400 thousand tons of cargo. Since the beginning of the terminal’s operation, almost 700 thousand tons of cargo have been handled through the terminal in 2018-2019. In January 2020, about 38 thousand tons of cargo were handled through the Astara terminal. After all the planned works are completed, the volume of cargo passing through the terminal is expected to increase.
At the same time, the process of attracting new cargo to the international North-South transport corridor continues.
