Turkey Hosts the Discussions on the Baku – Tbilisi – Kars Project
Turkey hosted the discussion on the state of play of the development of the Baku – Tbilisi – Kars railroad project between Mr. Javid Gurbanov, the Chairman of the Azerbaijan Railways CJS State Company, and Mr. Ahmed Arslan, the Turkish Minister for Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications.
Mr. Gurbanov shared his memories and thoughts about the steps taken for the restoration and reconstruction works as well as ideas about attracting freight volumes to this project. He informed his Turkish counterpart that all the works on laying the railway steel along the section of Georgia and the Turkish border had finished and that the locomotives, run on diesel, could already move along that section of railway. He added that the works on electrification, signaling equipment, and communication infrastructure along that railroad would have been completed by this August, which would allow the commissioning of that entire section of the railroad.
Mr. Ahmed Arslan in his return said that the Turkish side had already carried out a major part of construction works, too, while the installation of communication, signaling and communication equipment would have been completed by the end of this year.
The sides also reached an agreement to hold a trilateral meeting among the respective officials very soon in order to discuss and identify the conditions for the use of the Baku – Tbilisi – Kars railway and the tariff regime to be applied along this infrastructure.
