The volume of cargo transported via Azerbaijan along the North-South and South-West corridors increases
The volume of cargo transported via Azerbaijan along the North-South and South-West International Transport Corridors amounted to 220,358 tons or 3,799 wagons for 7 months of 2020, which is higher than last year. Statistics on transit for the same period in 2019 amounted to 160,537 tons of cargo and 2,406 wagons, respectively.
During the reporting period, a total of 275,283 tons of goods were transported in 5348 wagons via the Astara cargo terminal in Iran. Of this volume, 132,736 tons in 2114 wagons were delivered to Astara city, and 142,547 tons in 3234 wagons –from Astara.
The average daily transshipment of goods through the Astara terminal amounted to 1,529 tons or 30 wagons, showing a 12.3 percent growth in comparison with the last year. The main types of cargo are timber and wood products, cereals, fruits and vegetables, construction materials, etc.
In January-July 2020, 30% more goods were transported via the Astara (Iran) cargo terminal compared to the same period last year. During the same period in 2019, 194,265 tons of goods in 3,124 wagons were transported via the Astara (Iran) cargo terminal.
The leading countries in the volume of cargo transportation along the North-South route were Russia and Iran.
It should be noted that since the beginning of June, the Georgian railways have unilaterally banned the acceptance of cargo from Iran to Georgia, and cargo transportation through the South-West corridor has been virtually suspended. On average, about 10,000 tons of goods were transported on this route per month, and these cargoes currently are not transported. Otherwise, the total volume of cargo transported via the Astara terminal could be even higher.
It should be noted that ADY Express LLC, a subsidiary of the Azerbaijan Railways CJSC, is the operator of the cargo transshipment at the Astara cargo terminal.
